SOUTH-SOUTH (FEMALE) TEAM EMERGE CHAMPIONS AND MALE TEAM FINISHED IN SECOND PLACE AT THE PWC NATIONAL CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP

The National U-17 Cricket Championship powered by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as usual began with nationwide Zonal qualifiers. For the South-South zone, qualifiers took place at PortHarcourt, Rivers State.

Three states were present for the Female qualifiers namely Edo, Rivers and Bayelsa States. Team Edo (Female) remained unbeaten and came first after victory over both Team Rivers and Bayelsa. At the end of the tournament, a South-South Female Team was formed consisting of 8 Edo players, 4 Rivers and 2 Bayelsa players.

For the Male Team, States present were Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom. The Edo Male Team still maintained an all round victory against the competing states. A South-South Male Team was also formed with 7 Edo players, 4 Rivers, 1 Bayelsa and 2 Akwa Ibom players.

ZONALS MATCH OUTCOME (FEMALE):

Match 1: Rivers vs Edo

1st Innings: Team Edo scored 94 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.

2nd Innings: Team Rivers scored 75 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.

Team Edo won by 19 runs.

Match 2: Bayelsa vs Edo

1st Innings: Team Edo scored 123 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs.

2nd Innings: Team Rivers scored 30 all out in 15 overs.

Team Edo won by 93 runs.

ZONALS MATCH OUTCOME (MALE):

Match 1: Akwa Ibom vs Edo

1st Innings: Team Akwa Ibom scored 45 runs all out in 17 overs.

2nd Innings: Team Edo scored 47 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in10 overs.

Team Edo won by 6 wickets.

Match 3: Bayelsa vs Edo

1st Innings: Team Edo scored 142 runs for the loss of 3 wickets  in 25 overs.

2nd Innings: Team Bayelsa scored 24 runs all out in 9.4 overs.

Team Edo won by 118 runs.

Match 5: Rivers vs Edo

1st Innings: Team Edo scored 100 for the loss of 7 wickets in 25 overs.

2nd Innings: Team Rivers scored 46 runs all out in 24 overs.

Team Edo won by 54 runs.

Finals for the Championship was held at NCF Cricket Oval in Abuja. The maiden edition had Team South-South alongside South-West, South-East, North-Central and North-West battling for the Gold medal.

South-South Team captained by Ogechi George and Uranta Divine (Vc) after an emphatic win over South-West remained unbeaten and were crowned Champions. Ogechi George (SS) was named best Batsman and Peace Monday (SS) sweeps the Fielder and Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

The Male edition had South-South, North-West, North-Central, South-East, North-East and South-West present. After a loss against North-West, South-South team bounced back to finish in Second place for the Tournament. North-West came First with South-South as first runner up.

FINALS MATCH OUTCOME (FEMALE):

Match 2: South-South vs North-Central

Toss: won by North-Central and elected to bat

1st Innings: North Central scored 55 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 15 overs.

2nd Innings: South-South scored 56 runs for the no loss of wickets in 6.4 overs.

South-South won by 10 wickets.

Match 2: South-South vs North-West

Toss: won by North-West and elected to field

1st Innings: South-South scored 113 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 15 overs.

2nd Innings: North-West scored 54 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 15 overs.

South-South won by 59 runs.

Match 6: South-South vs South-East

Toss: won by South-East and elected to field

1st Innings: South-South scored 68 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 15 overs.

2nd Innings:South-East scored 58 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 15 overs.

South-South won by 10 runs.

Match 10 and Final Match: South-South vs South-West

Toss: won by South-South and elected to bat

1st Innings: South-South scored 114 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 15 overs.

2nd Innings:South-West scored 30 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 15 overs.

South-South won by 84 runs.

FINALS MATCH OUTCOME (MALE):

Match 2: South-South vs North-West

Toss: won by North-West and elected to field

1st Innings: South-South scored 83 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.

2nd Innings: North-West scored 84 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 10.5 overs.

North-West won by 7 wickets.

Match 4: South-South vs North-Central

Points shared due to bad weather.

Match 6: South-South vs South-East

Toss: won by South-East and elected to field

1st Innings: South-South scored 106 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.

2nd Innings: South-East scored 53 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 13.1 overs.

South-South won by 53 runs.

Match 10: South-South vs North-East

Toss: won by North-East and elected to bat

1st Innings: North-East scored 14 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 12.4 overs.

2nd Innings: South-South scored 16 runs for no loss of  wickets in 0.4 overs.

South-South won by 10 wickets.

15th and Final Match: South-South vs South-West

Toss: won by South-West and elected to field

1st Innings:South-South scored 101 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.

2nd Innings: South-West scored 78 runs for the loss of  9 wickets in 20 overs.

South-South won by 23 runs.
